Artist Research

John Ernest



Born in 1922 in Philadelphia, America, John Ernest was an American Constructivist- Abstract painter. 
After working in Sweden and Paris from 1946 to 1951, he moved to London were he continued to work. He became a mature student at Saint Martins School of Art, and came under the influence of Victor Pismire. 
During the 1950's together with Anthony Hill, Kenneth Martin, Mary Martin, Stephen Gilbert, and Gillian Wise, he became a key member of the British Constructivists. 

He created both reliefs and free standing constructions. He had a lifelong fascination with mathematics, which is reflected in his work. 
He and Anthony Hill made contribution to graph theory.
