Inspiration: Giorgio de Chirico

Painting Experiment

After researching into specific artists involved in the Surrealist movement, I was really interested in one particular artist: Giorgio De Chirico. I liked the colours he worked with, and how he painted in a style that was semi realistic and bold.

Out of boredom I had been sketching small figures from looking at images on the internet of marble sculptures.

I decided to take these sketches and make something out of them before I hit a wall and got stuck. From this, I found another figure and sketched it out, and did some basic under painting, which I built on top of with the colours I wanted to use, and so that I had a rough guide of the shading without having to look too much at the figure I had been referencing from.
The painting I was referencing was 'The Uncertainty Of The Poet', painted in 1913.

The colours I used were predominantly yellows and blues, with added colours if definition was needed. I finished off the painting by adding a black outline, as he had done, however, mine wasn't as steady, and so looks a little rough.

I finished off the painting by adding a bright colour around the figure, rather than adding a detailed background, because it fit into the theme I was experimenting with at the time, which was colour, and how a subject was perceived depending on the colours used.

After looking at it for a while, I realised it was out of proportion, however, life drawing sessions have improved how I look at the figure and gradually build on top of a light sketch to achieve the correct proportions.
